My third album "Solo" was released in January 1993. "Solo" gave me the
wherewithal to tour the eastern United States and garnered my first review! An
Atlantic City, N.J. newspaper carried the review, and although I don't have a
copy any longer, I can tell you that it was rated 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. "Solo"
also received some airplay in several radio markets. I no longer have it on CD, so if you want a copy, click
on the cover and order one before Amazon.com runs out!
1. pass it around 3:56
On one level, this is a true story about a phone call from a friend that came
at a time when it was desperately needed. On another level, a song about
sharing joy with everyone that you can.
2. something blue 4:41
A true story about playing for an ex-girlfriend's wedding. It was not nearly as
dramatic in real life.
3. in the beat of a heart 4:34
This song was written for a friend who lost her partner in a motorcycle
accident. I'm simply telling her that if it had been me, I would want her to
remember the good life lived, not the unfair end.
4. could've been me 5:06
A song about hearing from an ex-lover, and how differently both people's lives
had progressed. On a broader level, a song about how the bad experiences in
life invariably lead to good things, and vice-versa. Karma, y'know.
5. not tonight i've got a heartache 3:30
An attempt to be cute with a phrase. While the song stands on its own as a
story of turning away from meaningless encounters, the message is trivialized
by the title. Oh, well, live and learn.
6. province of fools 4:39
It's said that fools go where angels fear to tread. This song is about wanting
to get inside an old photograph in order to recapture the time spent with
someone that I miss terribly.
7. hello stranger 5:48
The story of a long telephone call with an ex-lover, and hearing about the new
love of her life. Every word in the song is true and was spoken in that
conversation, but I did take some license with the phrasing.
8. make time for me 3:51 - (cd bonus track)
A rerecording of a song from my first album, "Simple Sketches" that I felt
needed to be updated. It's an unusual song for me because the imagery is not as
concrete as my more recent material.
9. carolina wanderin' 3:47 - (cd bonus track)
A rerecording of a song on my second album, "Random Glances". This is a song
about traveling through North Carolina while on tour.
10. need a little rain 5:38
An ambitious song about the plight of a farmer when soil suffers from drought
and the soul suffers from doubt.
11. someone like you 3:00
A short song written for someone I apparently haven't met yet.
12. nightmare in the sand 5:39
Written on the eve of the Gulf War. I received the ultimate compliment from my
friend Jake, who served there, when he told me that if he didn't know better,
he would have thought I'd been there.
13. young white male 3:53
I wrote this as a joke on personal ads. It has alternately caused a lot of
problems and created some new friendships. Very unlike most of my other
material. Originally recorded on "Random Glances".
14. tourist trade 4:20
A summer tourist town is an odd place during the winter. This song actually got
me fired from the hotel bar I was playing in! Listen to the song and see if you
can tell which line angered the owner.
15. the smile i got from you 5:09
A song that was inspired by watching dolphins sporting beneath the Bridge of
Lions here in St. Augustine late one
summer evening, and realizing that I had found a place that i wanted to call
home.
16. last year's veteran 4:03
A song I wrote about my father, and the difference between the treatment of
veterans of Vietnam and veterans from the Gulf War. A part of me will always be angry that my father's service to this
country was never appreciated as much as those who came later. I hope that this song makes a difference in the hearts of people who use
terms like "baby-killer" without considering the effect it has.
